Whistler
From Vancouver, follow the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway to the resort village of Whistler. Whistler is the busiest winter recreation destination in British Columbia and has repeatedly been named the top Ski and Snowboard Resort in North America. Whistler is nestled amongst the magnificent Coast Mountains and its natural setting is as beautiful in summer as it is in winter. Whistler is the site for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Whistler attracts nearly two million visitors annually. It is a year-round destination and, despite the phenomenal skiing, more people visit in the summer (May to October) than in the winter (November to April). Golf, hiking, mountain biking, swimming and canoeing are only a few of the popular summer activities available in the Whistler area.
In February 1966, when Garibaldi Lift Company opened a ski area on the west side of Whistler Mountain, the Whistler resort was only the vision of a dedicated few. The development of Whistler just 14 years later and its successive growth into an award-winning, international resort, is unparalleled in ski history. To complement Whistler Mountain, Blackcomb Mountain opened a brand new facility in 1980, and Whistler Village was built at the base of these two side-by-side mountains.
Whistler Village was designed with innovative design principles to take advantage of the Coast Mountains and superb geographical location. Developed by North America’s leading architects, planners and landscape professionals, the layout of the village emphasizes excellent sun exposure and breathtaking vistas. Whistler's high design standards and commitment to first-class facilities and service have earned international recognition.
It has the most ski-in/ski-out accommodation of any mountain recreation resort in North America. The cobblestone, pedestrian-only streets and squares of Whistler Village are lined with restaurants, lounges, bars, and shops. Whistler has more than 7,000 acres of skiable terrain. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains together have 200 runs and 33 lifts and the greatest vertical drop on the continent.
