Military Ships Visiting Victoria

As the home to Canada’s Navy on the west coast, Victoria supports a number of military ships and receives a number of visiting vessels throughout the year. The ships range in size and cargo, but the naval crews often share a day or two exploring Victoria and all it has to offer. A few of the military ships to visit Victoria recently are listed below.



USS Abraham Lincoln

The USS Abraham Lincoln is a 97,500 tonne, Nimitz Class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier which was commissioned 11 November 1989 and is stationed in Everett, Washington. The ship’s company numbers up to 5,500 and the ship is often referred to as a floating city.

Interesting facts

  • The ship is 338 metres long.
  • The flight deck is 4.5 acres. 
  • There are 6,000 phone lines onboard.
  • On board radio and TV stations feature 16 satellite channels.
  • Volunteer radio DJ's can choose from 35,000 songs on CDs.
  • Half of the ship's company are between 17 and 20 years old.
  • There are 22 basketball teams and 5 gymnasiums.
  • The ship has two 30 tonne anchors.
  • The ship weighs 97500 tonnes.
  • The crew count is 3185 (203 officers).
  • 2800 aircrew are on board (366 officers).
USS Ogden

This Austin Class amphibious transport dock is an all-purpose ship capable of carrying troops, cargo and tanks. In addition, it operates troop and cargo-carrying helicopters to project assault forces from the helicopter landing platform inland in support of the beachhead. It has the capability to simultaneously launch amphibious assaults by sea and air. USS Ogden was commissioned in New York in June 1965.

Interesting facts

  • The well deck is 165 feet by 49 feet and accommodates up to nine assault landing craft at one time.
  • Ogden's upper vehicle stowage area alone contains 7,269 square feet of stowage capacity and can accommodate 47 three-quarter ton trucks.
  • With helicopters and medium landing craft, Ogden can project ashore more than 900 combat troops with full combat equipment against enemy beaches and inland areas.
  • Ogden has a length of 570 feet and a beam of 108 feet.
  • When fully loaded, she displaces more than 17,000 tons.
  • Her fuel capacity of over 700,000 gallons gives the ship a cruising range equal to a distance halfway around the world.
  • Ogden can store more than 100,000 gallons of fresh water in her tanks, while two freshwater distilling plants can generate an additional 60,000 gallons a day.
  • Ogden has a crew of 25 officers and 400 enlisted men.


USS Coronado

The USS Coronado is a 16,912 tonne converted Austin Class miscellaneous command ship which was commissioned May 23, 1970. The ship’s homeport is San Diego, California. Coronado is designated the command ship for the Commander, United States Third Fleet. The foremost responsibility of Third Fleet is the protection of the western sea approaches to the United States. As the command ship, Coronado's mission is to support the Fleet Commander and to be ready to take the Commander and his staff to sea to provide on-scene command, including command of a joint task force.

  • The crew consists of 30 Officers and 491 enlisted men.
  • Coronado is 173.8 metres long.
  • Coronado cruises at a speed of 21 knots.

USS Rushmore

USS Rushmore is a Whidbey Island class dock-landing ship and is named after the Mount Rushmore National Monument in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The ship’s homeport is San Diego, California. Currently, Rushmore is the test platform for the Smart Ship programme known as Gator 17. The ship has been outfitted with several new technologies to reduce workload and manning levels. Information from the programme aboard Rushmore will be used to assist the design of the LPD 17 Class amphibious ships.

Interesting facts

  • Mrs. Meredith Brokaw, wife of NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw, christened the ship on May 6, 1989.
  • Cargo capacity on Rushmore is 5,000 cubic feet for marine cargo, 12,500 square feet for vehicles (including four preloaded landing craft).
  • The hull displacement of this ship is 15,726 tonnes.
