Southern Gulf Islands

The southern Gulf Islands are located off the shores of south-eastern Vancouver Island. These islands are famous for exceptional arts and crafts, country inns, excellent restaurants, provincial campsites, hiking, kayaking, cycling and breathtaking scenery.

All of the southern Gulf Islands listed below are accessible via BC Ferries from Swartz Bay (several sailings go to each island daily), with the exception of Gabriola Island ,which is accessible from Nanaimo. Salt Spring Island is also accessible from Crofton. Float plane service to the Gulf Islands is also available.

Salt Spring Island
Salt Spring is the largest and most populated of the southern Gulf Islands and was named for fourteen natural salt springs located on its northern end. Highlights include several art galleries and artisan studios, a provincial park and campground, historic sites, a summertime Saturday market and 11 freshwater lakes.

Pender Island
Known as the "Island of Hidden Coves and Beaches", Pender Island features twenty access points to secluded beaches. Recommended activities include kayaking, canoeing and hiking.

Mayne Island
This small, historical island was once the stopping point for gold miners crossing the water to the British Columbia mainland. Sandstone caves, historic sites, hiking trails and swimming beaches are highlights.

Galiano Island
A small island renowned for its spectacular scenery, Galiano boasts beautiful Montague Harbour Provincial Park and offers peaceful activities such as hiking, sailing, kayaking, cycling and fishing.

Saturna Island
The southernmost of the Gulf Islands, restful Saturna Island is a haven for hiking, sailing, beachcombing and fishing enthusiasts. A visit to its vineyards is always a highlight.

Gabriola Island
A 20-minute sail from Nanaimo takes you to Gabriola Island, known as the Queen of the Gulf Islands. Highlights include amazing sandstone formations, beautiful parks, craft galleries, artisan studios and activities such as diving, kayaking, hiking and cycling.
