Dallas Road VictoriaThe post-Christmas comedown is a common complaint for many of us this time of year. But January is also a great time to shake off the cobwebs and start a new routine or venture! This year, instead of getting dragged down, check out some of our ideas for exercising your body, mind and soul, and start 2014 in fine form. Body – While getting back to the gym or yoga studio in January might not be the best way to beat the crowds, it is a great way to beat the winter blues. As well, many of the city’s gyms and recreation centres offer a whole host of additional classes – including spin, Pilates and nutrition – which are often included in the membership fee. If you’re looking to get in shape but are put off by the thought of braving the gym, consider joining a fun recreational sports league or training for one of the city’s many long distance runs, like the TC10K or the Victoria Goddess Run. Leagues are available for every sport you can dream of, including a few you probably didn’t even know existed. Whether it’s a classic rec sport like flag football or ultimate, or the more niche offerings of bicycle polo or dodgeball, there’s something for everyone! Mind – It’s easy to neglect yourself during the excitement of Christmas. Running around shopping, socializing, entertaining and cooking can all a toll on you, so make sure you get back to doing you in the New Year. Be that visiting the Royal BC Museum, the Maritime Museum of B.C. or Craigdarroch Castle and broadening your historical knowledge, or recharging your batteries and curling up with a good book from one the city’s many bookstores. Soul – One of the best ways to nourish the soul is to simply get outside. Leave your cellphone, mp3 player and any other distraction at home, and go for a walk. We are blessed to have so many amazing outdoor escapes at our doorstep in Victoria, so take advantage of them! Stroll through Beacon Hill Park and along Dallas Road, go for a short hike in East Sooke Park or Gowland Tod Provincial Park, or just head down to one of the city’s many beaches and admire the view.
