Family Day is a new provincial holiday for British Columbia residents! The first-ever Family Day happened in 2013, making the second weekend in February a long weekend for us. Greater Victoria attractions, stores and restaurants, movie theatres, live performance theatres, museums, galleries and other family-friendly attractions are open.
Some ideas for your weekend could include:
- Heading to Sidney for LEGO Weekend! Community organizations and businesses are teaming up for a full three day weekend of Sidney Family Day LEGO fun! LEGO displays, interactive building opportunities, a treasure hunt, and a professional LEGO builder are just some of the reasons to spend time in Sidney for the 2014 Sidney Family Day LEGO Weekend
- Immersing yourself in the rainforest at Victoria Butterfly Gardens, meeting the marine life of the Salish Sea at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, or saying hello to some creepy crawlies at Victoria Bug Zoo
- Visiting one of Victoria's museums or art galleries. One of the top museums in Canada, the Royal BC Museum, is offering free admission on Family Day, making it the perfect time to learn about the history of Victoria, the natural world or interesting artworks, and perhaps even take in an IMAX film while you're at it
For those wanting to get outdoorsy, year-round hiking and walking trails is a great perk of Victoria's mild winters. Even if it's rainy, the trees will help keep you dry. Elk, Beaver and Thetis Lakes offer easy-to-moderate trails. Or visit Goldstream Provincial Park a mere 16 kilometres from downtown Victoria and experience massive trees, majestic waterfalls, a meandering river that meets the sea, and fascinating flora and fauna.
