Vikings have invaded Victoria, B.C.! But don't fear - they aren't here to raid or pillage. As the first location on the exhibit's North American tour, Vikings: Lives Beyond the Legends at the Royal BC Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the past and the lives of these incredible people. Vikings provides insights into domestic life, death rituals, the significance of craft, the power of mythology and the symbolism of ships. The collection comprises more than 500 artifacts including jewellery, swords, axes and clothing; some rare, and many never before shown outside Scandinavia.
The artifacts speak for themselves, but the exhibition also includes films, board games, and audio sagas about the life of the gods. Using computer interfaces, visitors can build a Viking ship, excavate a boat burial or dress a Viking. Learning extends beyond the exhibition with a family sleepover, a talk on Viking DNA, a Viking archaeology course, and Viking summer camps for kids.
