Lyle Lovett is one of the all-time great American singer/songwriters. His voice is unique, but his antecedents are recognizable. While music should be and is open for interpretation by the listener, Lovett's new album, IT'S NOT BIG IT'S LARGE, suggests notions of mortality, loss and the fluidity of time. In many of the songs, the past intrudes on the present and the narrator finds strength to deal with the travails of today by putting them into historical perspective. Lyle Lovett does a lot of things very well, but one of his most important talents is his ability to make us aware of how much the past lives in us and how what we do today shapes how we will consider our lives later. The people in old songs, old photographs and even old TV shows were once just as alive and full of feelings as we are now. They were what we are; we will someday be as they are. That can be an intimidating thought, but Lovett also offers us consolation; when we sing their songs, when we remember them, they are alive again.

Price: $67.50 - $89.50 (+ service charge)
Date(s): Jul 11, 2012
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is excited to partner with CINECENTA to present this screening of William Kurelek's the Maze, featuring a post-screening QandA with the filmmaker Nick Young and AGGV Chief Curator Mary Jo Hughes. This program is offered in conjunction with the exhibition William Kurelek: The Messenger, on view at the AGGV (1040 Moss Street) from May 6 to Sep 3, 2012.
William Kurelek's The Maze is a documentary about the life of celebrated Canadian artist William Kurelek, dramatically told through his paintings and his on camera revelations. The film takes an intimate look into the life of one of the 20th century's most fascinating artists and his struggles with attempted suicide and a self professed 'spiritual crisis'. More on the film is located at www.themazemovie.com.
Throughout a career that spanned from mid-1950s until his death, William Kurelek (1927-1977) and his art have meant many different things to many people. The Alberta-born, Manitoba-raised artist was a painter of innocence and fun, his scenes reminiscences of a simpler and timeless past. He was also a chronicler of the experiences of various cultural groups in Canada, devoting entire series to Ukrainian, Jewish, Polish, Irish, French Canadian, and Inuit peoples. Then there is Kurelek the anguished prophet of a modern apocalypse, his art an indictment of the secular age and a testament to unwavering faith.
A gorgeous limited edition catalogue accompanies the exhibition, as well as an interactive website: www.kurelek.ca

Join Tobi Bruce from the Art Gallery of Hamilton in discussion of Kurelek as Journeyman Picture Maker. This special guest talk will kick off our thematic lecture series continuing through the summer, delving into the multiple facets of this complicated artist and icon. This program is offered in conjunction with the exhibition William Kurelek: The Messenger, on view at the AGGV from May 6 to Sep 3, 2012.

Then there is Kurelek the anguished prophet of a modern apocalypse, his art an indictment of the secular age and a testament to unwavering faith.
An important and unique aspect of this exhibition for Canadian audiences will be the inclusion of several works from Kurelek's highly formative period in England from 1952 to 1959. During this time the young artist underwent psychiatric treatment and converted to Roman Catholicism, which profoundly altered his subsequent approach to life and art making. It is in consideration of these early works that the exhibition reveals Kurelek's complex psyche and the central role it played in everything he produced.

Rick Leong: The Phenomenology of Dusk
Rick Leong's large scale paintings create haunting and lush landscapes that hover in the intangible realm of dusk. Influenced by both Chinese and Canadian landscape painting traditions, the themes articulated in Leong's work begin in the natural world - forests, mountains, meadows and night skies - and become immersive spaces built from imagination and memory. In keeping with Chinese landscape tradition these scenes are more than mere representations of nature. They are at once tangible and ethereal in their articulation of the psychological experience of dusk. As Leong states, ''The Phenomenology of Dusk is the study of the phenomena that is illuminated by a waning light in the gathering darkness, encouraging the imagination to form the visible from the invisible.'' The imagery in his work leads us through a poetic narrative that speaks of utopic landscapes; an idealized and constructed view of nature that has been prominent throughout the history of Canadian landscape painting. This project will feature a new series of work that evolved during an artist residency in Barcelona, Spain in January 2012.

Feast on exquisite tastes from chefs of some of the finest restaurants on our island and quench your thirst on samples from local wineries and breweries. This year's theme is street food! Why not highlight the lesser-known and more affordable local foods and use them in fun ways? A few items that may make an appearance: sardines, nettles, lardo, gooseneck barnacles, dog fish, and water buffalo! Food Fest is a family-friendly event with great kid focused food activities too! This is an annual fundraiser with ticket sales going towards micro loans that enable local farmers to grow more food and connect with local merchants.
The ICC comprises of liked-minded community chefs and food and beverage professionals with a common interest in regional food security. They are working together to raise public awareness of local sustainability issues and support for locally produced food. This year they have a new zero-interest micro loan fund for farmers and processors - with over $100,000 to give away. The aim of the fund is to provide a pool of funds for growers, harvesters and processors to invest in equipment and materials that allows them to increase the supply of food in the region.

HER EXTENSIVE CLASSICAL REPERTOIRE includes over 100 different piano concertos spanning the breadth of keyboard music from Bach to the music of prominent composers of our time. Her affinities range from Mozart (InTune magazine: 'the closest thing to a perfect disc of Mozart piano music known') to Chopin to Busoni (a friend of the Busoni family, she studied with several of his important pupils) to Japanese music to Ragtime, Novelty Classics and Gershwin (Deseret News: 'the greatest performance of Rhapsody in Blue I have ever heard'). She has composed several suites for piano as well as music for chamber ensemble and voice. And she is also one of the very few concert pianists today performing original scores to silent movies, like 'Ben Hur' (150 minutes non-stop!) at New York's Lincoln Center.

Not the Follies but the Foley!
Does the sound of a frozen Romaine lettuce being torn in half remind you of a bone crushing injury? Does the crinkling of cellophane conjure up a crackling fire? Here's one more - lurking footsteps of a mysterious stranger crunching over snow, is actually corn starch being squeezed in a leather pouch.
These sound effects are created through the old fashioned art of Foley, and you can hear more in Target Theatre's* fundraiser radio play performance, LIVE at Langham.
Expect hilarious miscues, advertising jingles, and old time dramatic fun!

Other Guys Theatre proudly presents acclaimed tenor Richard Margison in a concert performance of Tobin Stokes' new chamber opera, Rattenbury, based on the true story of the architect of the same name.
Well known in Victoria for his grand Parliament Buildings and Empress Hotel, Rattenbury's tumultuous life story is truly operatic in proportion. His incredible ambition, his huge misfortunes through WW1, failed land speculations, the sinking of the Titanic and his role in the Klondike gold rush culminated in a dramatic and sordid fall from grace. His eventual murder in England by his young wife's even younger lover resulted in one of the most famous court cases ever to take place at the Old Bailey and led one to a death sentence and another to suicide.
Concert performances will be presented under the baton of Maestro Arthur Arnold, Principal Guest Conductor of the Moscow Symphony.

Price: Price Info Not Available (visit www.otherguystheatre.ca for ticket information)
Date(s): Sep 29, 2012
Sep 30, 2012
The 2012 Victoria Gran Fondo is where experienced cyclists put all those weekend rides to good use; where your fitness can take you; a full day in the saddle; a tour of Southern Vancouver Island. Bring it on!
This year's offering is limited to 85 participants. We will see you for a pre-fondo gourmet meal at the Hotel Grand Pacific on June 22nd 2012 and for the fondo-day breakfast at the Hotel Grand Pacific on June 23rd 2012. We have improved the tracking of you and your equipment bags through each support station. Support stations will now match food and nutritional supplements to each stage of the ride. We are also introducing segment timing so you can separate time spent at support stations from time spent riding. We expect that it will take a little longer to get final results out, but will provide a more realistic view of your efforts.

Price: Price Info Not Available
Date(s): Jun 23, 2012
Starting and ending in Victoria, BC, Canada, the Swiftsure is international because the mid-point markers are in U.S. waters. Organized by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, the race occurs during the last weekend in May with staggered starts on Saturday morning. The race is most popular with sailors from British Columbia and Washington, but it has drawn boats from as far away as California, Hawaii, New Zealand, and even Russia.

The bronco bucks hard. Can the rider stay on and subdue the wild stallion? Later, can he lasso the racing steer and wrestle the beast to a halt? This is the Luxton Pro Rodeo, Vancouver Island's last remaining rodeo, and it is only in Langford.
The hugely popular Luxton Pro Rodeo at the Luxton Fairgrounds in Langford combines the excitement of a Wild West test of endurance and skill foreign to the urban dweller with carnival rides, an antique car show, live music, blacksmith demonstrations, and vendors. Kids can try the cowboy lifestyle by Mutton Bustin': strap a helmet on their little heads and make sure they have a tight grip on a wooly sheep.

Price: $27.00 - $35.00
Date(s): May 21, 2012
May 22, 2012
May 23, 2012
Celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the Royal BC Museum. This special exhibition of nearly 100 portraits by royal photographer, Cecil Beaton (1904-80) depicts Elizabeth in her roles as princess, monarch and mother, and will include a number of rarely-seen photographs alongside extracts from Beaton's personal diaries and letters. Beaton's royal portraits were among the most widely published photos of the 20th century. The exhibition explores Beaton's long relationship with Elizabeth, who was a teenage princess when he first photographed her in 1942.The five-section exhibition charts the shift in Beaton's style from early rococo-inspired portraits to the starker images of the 1960s.

Price: Price Info Not Available
Date(s): Jun 01, 2012 - Sep 03, 2012
In their final performance of the 2011-12 season, the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria is offering an evening of little-known Austrian and German serenades. The program includes Robert Volkmann's Serenade no. 2 in F major, Op. 63, Julius Klengel's Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 24, and Robert Fuchs Serenade No. 3 in E minor, Op. 21.
All three of these individuals are not only highly regarded composers but they were also respected musicians and teachers. Over the years, however, their music was largely forgotten and today has almost totally disappeared from the concert stage. Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra will breathe new life into these serenades at their season-ending concert and this will be a great opportunity to hear some wonderful classical pieces that you may never have heard before.

Price: $33.00 (Price for seniors is $30.
