The Victoria Conservatory of Music presents Janina Fialkowska: Chopin 2010.
Janina Fialkowska is Canada's foremost interpreter of Chopin.
Critics all over the world praise Janina Fialkowska's Chopin, mentioning over and over again her beautiful, expressive sound, her lyricism, her elegance, her phrasing, her passion for and deep understanding of the music.
Chopin's music is in Janina Fialkowska's Polish blood which explains her instinctive understanding of the Chopin rhythms, aristocratic moods and Slavic melancholy. With her early studies in Paris, she also acquired Chopin's French attributes including his sense of refinement and stylish elegance.
Janina Fialkowska's lifelong obsession with beautiful, singing keyboard sounds coupled with her brilliant technique are a perfect match for the Chopinesque belcanto-inspired melodies, the powerful bravura passages and the delicate ornamental filigree.
She has prepared an All-Chopin birthday recital especially for the anniversary year as well as a mixed program consisting of Mozart and/or Schumann in the first half and Chopin in the second.
Tickets are on sale now at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (250-386-5311) or at the McPherson Box Office, in person, by phone at 250-386-6121 or online at www.rmts.bc.ca.<br/><br/><b>Price:</b> $10.00 - $19.50 <br/><b>Date(s):</b> Mar 18, 2010<br/>

John Scofield Piety Street Band w. Jon Cleary: Not just a modern jazz hero, John Scofield is a guru of groove. Boasting one of the most distinctive sounds in jazz, he's also hailed for bringing fresh concepts to every new project over a 30+ year career. Delving back into Crescent City beats, Scofield is touring with his latest group, The Piety Street Band with whom he recorded his latest CD Piety Street - a very bluesy new album with an old-time gospel repertoire that satisfied Scofield's quest for material that would allow a blues project to go beyond the standard 12 bar blues. Scofield's Piety Street Band includes solid New Orleans blues musicians Jon Cleary (Bonnie Raitt Band musical director) piano, organ and vocals, George Porter Jr. (of the Meters) bass, Ricky Fataar drums, and Shannon Powell percussion.
Blind since birth, Raul Midon is a contemporary soul singer whose impassioned acoustic guitar playing - a mix of rock, classical, and flamenco - has given him just as much attention as his smooth voice. His major-label debut, State of Mind, featuring guest appearances from Stevie Wonder and Jason Mraz, was released by Manhattan Records in June 2005.

Renee Rosnes is a four-time Juno Award winner and a Blue Note recording artist with nine albums under her name. She has been the pianist for Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and JJ Johnson, among others, and is a founding member of the SF Jazz Collective.
Joshua Redman's 'James Farm' is a new collaboration project featuring Joshua saxophone, Aaron Parks piano, Matt Penman bass and Erik Harland drums. The band infuses traditional acoustic jazz quartet instrumentation with a progressive attitude and modern sound, creating music that is rhythmically and technically complex and at the same time harmonically rich, melodically satisfying and emotionally compelling. James Farm debuted at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival to a packed house and rave reviews.

            <date>Apr 23, 2010 - Apr 24, 2010</date>

Set on an iceberg somewhere in our collective memories, APRIL 14, 1912 weaves together three viewpoints of this iconic tragedy that has forever stained in our memories. Combining Marconi officer Harold Bride's eye-witness textual accounts of the disaster and an inimitable physical style, two crewmembers and the Ship herself collide once again to tell their tales.
APRIL 14, 1912 explores history as poetic memory - expressionistic, physically aggressive and emotionally resonant. APRIL 14, 1912 received 5 Dora Mavor Award nominations and toured to the prestigious Magnetic North Festival and Supernova Theatre Festival in Halifax last year.
Student Rush tickets will be available at the door 10 minutes before show time for $10.00, subject to availability.

            <date>Aug 14, 2010 - Aug 15, 2010</date>

What began as a one day music event - Jazz in the Garden - in 2004, has expanded into Music in the Garden, a two day festival this year. The music programming will feature one day of classical music, followed by a second day of jazz. The venue for this special weekend of music remains the same: the stunning seaside historical site of Milner Gardens and Woodland in Qualicum Beach, BC on Vancouver Island.
Artistic director and five time JUNO nominated jazz saxophonist, Phil Dwyer, has planned Saturday's program to focus on classical chamber music. There will be a variety of performances including string quartet, brass quintet, and soloists performing works by classic and contemporary composers. Sunday's afternoon of world-class jazz will range from jazz standards to catchy originals, small groups and large, offering something for all jazz lovers.
Single Admission and Weekend passes are available at Milner Gardens and Woodlands or call 250-752-6153.
Also visit special events at: www.milnergardens.org or go to jazz festival at: www.phildwyer.com.

The gardens on the 70 acre Milner Gardens & Woodland site were originally designed in 1937 by private residents, Ray and Rina Milner, then expanded into a 10 acre garden by Milner's's second wife, Veronica. In 1996, the property was donated to Nanaimo's Vancouver Island University in the Milners' memory. Operated by a non-profit society since 2000, the botanical variety of the gardens provides a superb living laboratory for VIU's horticultural students, a world class display of rare and unique plants for the public's delight and enjoyment, as well as management of the Douglas-fir forest. Director, Geoff Ball, staff and volunteers present a variety of fundraising events throughout the year. <br/><br/><b>Price:</b> $25.00 - $55.00 <br/><b>Date(s):</b> Aug 14, 2010 - Aug 15, 2010<br/>

            <price>$150.00</price>
            <priceNotes />
            <date>May 29, 2010</date>

Hosted by Vicki Gabereau, the Wild Lilies Gala, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Region, celebrates the power of women like the Sisters of Saint Ann and Emily Carr.
Emily Carr painted an oil painting of wild lilies that was thought to be have been a favourite of her sister Elizabeth. After Elizabeth passed away from breast cancer, Emily gave the painting to the Sisters of Saint Ann in appreciation of the care they provided to Lizzie. The painting has not been widely seen by the public and has been in a private collection. The original painting will be unveiled and a reproduction will be auctioned at the Gala.
Join us for a fabulous dinner and great entertainment at Crystal Garden as we raise awareness and funds for a future without breast cancer.

The Destroyers fought their way to the top. They came out of Delaware in the '70s as a jarringly high-energy bunch (also featuring drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Billy Blough) whose raucous, slide guitar-stoked, blues-rock takes on tunes by Chuck Berry, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and others helped land them a contract with Cambridge's Rounder Records. They had moved to Boston and cut their teeth in the city's blues circuit before their second album for Rounder, Move It On Over, struck big with the title track, an amped-up cover of a Hank Williams tune. They added a saxophonist (Hank Carter) and further fame came in the '80s through a signing to EMI Records, which released a series of gold records by the band. These included 1982's Bad to the Bone (the title track is Thorogood's best-known composition and its video became a staple on MTV) and 1988's Born to Be Bad, with the swaggering hit ,'You Talk Too Much.' The '90s saw more hit-making with 1993's 'Get a Haircut,'' from the album Haircut. And albums followed into the new millennium with 2003's Ride 'Til I Die--and 2006's Hard Stuff--on Eagle Records, and a 2004 Capitol compilation, Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock, which went gold and was #1 on Billboard's blues chart for a noteworthy 60 weeks, while winning the magazine's award for blues record of the year. <br/><br/><b>Price:</b> $49.50 - $79.50 (Plus FMF and service charges.)<br/><b>Date(s):</b> May 12, 2010<br/>

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, directed by Michael Shamata.
In this charming, clever and sweet-natured musical comedy, six precocious, quirky and neurotic children, in the throes of puberty, compete for the title of spelling bee champ. Overseen by grown-ups who barely escaped childhood themselves, these youngsters learn that winning isn't everything, and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The show's Tony Award-winning creative team has fashioned the unlikeliest of hit musicals out of the unlikeliest of heroes: angst-ridden, overachieving outsiders, for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

The Barra McNeils visit Victoria as part of celebrations for the 10th Anniversary of Vancouver Island's Celtfest. Steeped in Cape Breton tradition with strong Celtic roots and musical artistry, this diverse and talented family group sells out shows around the world with their captivating vocals, harmonies and extraordinary musicianship.
As a group, the six MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live concert acts in the Celtic world. Hailing from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the family group is deeply rooted in Celtic music, culture, dance, language and history. Their numerous critically acclaimed recordings have included their own original songs as well as tried and true standards, both instrumental and vocal.
The Barra MacNeils live concert experience brings so much more to the stage than most live acts ever can. Multiple lead vocalists, beautiful sibling harmonies, top drawer instrumental prowess on a wide variety of acoustic, stringed, percussion and wind instruments blended with dancing, storytelling, Gaelic songs and a journey through an ancient culture; it is family entertainment at its highest level.
Hedley will appear with special guests Faber Drive, Stereos and Fefe Dobson.
There's been no free ride in Hedley's steady climb to the top. Over four years, the band has earned two multi-platinum albums and won acclaim and a devoted fan base through a constant regimen of hard work and relentless touring. Nor is there an ounce of phoniness in the group, led by irrepressible frontman Jacob Hoggard, a former Canadian Idol contestant himself. In fact, much of Hedley's huge appeal lies in the band members' refusal to take themselves too seriously.
They may not be'rocket surgeons,' saving lives or saving the world, but Hedley is clearly making a contribution to the music scene. From the fizzy pop-punk of its debut to the sophisticated pop-rock of The Show Must Go, Hedley continues to prove that mixing frivolity with thoughtfulness and showmanship with songcraft is the best formula for success.<br/><br/><b>Price:</b> $45.00 (Plus FMF and Service charges)<br/><b>Date(s):</b> Mar 23, 2010<br/>

Amina Figarova is without doubt one of the most productive jazz composers and talented jazz piano players from Europe. She studied as a classical concert pianist at the Baku Conservatory, jazz performance at the Rotterdam Conservatory then the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1998 she was accepted into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Colony in Aspen, Colorado.
Amina's latest album Above the Clouds was released in 2008 and spent 10 weeks in the Top 15 of the JazzWeek USA Jazz Chart. Far from derivative or concept-conscious, Above the Clouds unfolds as a personal, vividly coloured, confidently-propelled contemporary soundtrack, satisfying in and of itself. Throughout the entire album Amina's measured, graceful, touching pianism and cooly-controlled ensemble writing demonstrate commitment and ease with a jazz idiom.
With her husband multi-flutist Bart Platteau who is central to the three horn frontline, Amina arranges for her sextet. She plays compelling, artful and heartfelt changes on the urbane, bluesy lyricism originally developed by the likes of Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Other members of the sextet from the Netherlands performing in Victoria include, Mark Mamaa tenor Sax, Alex Pope Norris trumpet, Chris Strik drums and Roland Guerin bass.
Tickets availale at the McPherson Box Office and its outlets, 250-386-6121 or online at www.rmts.bc.ca, Lyle's Place and the Victoria Jazz Society office at 250-388-4423.

Matt Anderson is New Brunswick's larger than life showman, who plays real and rocking acoustic blues and never fails to impress.
Matt Andersen describes himself as a big man with a big voice. There's no doubt he plays guitar and sings the blues with an authority that belies his youthful age. Matt hails from New Brunswick but has spent a lot of time on the road, most recently last fall touring across Canada with Stuart McLeans' Vinyl Cafe when he received a standing ovation in Victoria. Matt Andersen has an enigmatic personality that, coupled with a larger-than-life showmanship, has been earning him a fervent and steadfast audience. Matt's sprawling blues, roots and rock hybrid, and his enormous soulful voice have sparked phenomenal grass roots word-of-mouth buzz across the country. Matt's most recent CD, Something in Between, was released in 2008.
Opening the evening will be singer, songwriter and guitarist, Wil who is a consummate touring musician developing his expansive roots-rock sound and world-weary lyricisms while building a dedicated following for his famously intense live shows. Wil brings to mind contemporary artists ranging from Paul Simon to David Gray. He spent the winter of 2009 at home in Qualicum Beach writing the songs for his just released third studio album In this Together. For his performance in Victoria he will be accompanied by his drummer, Jason Cook.

Three extraordinary voices, two founding singer-songwriters, one singular vision: The Wailin' Jennys continue to evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their individual talents five years after blowing in on a fresh acoustic breeze from Canada's mid-western heartland.
Spurred onward by a growing fan base that swoons at their intuitive harmonies and revels in their engaging stage presence and uplifting repertoire, the Jennys embarked on a giddy blur of activity following the release of their second album, Firecracker, in August, 2006. Numerous head-turning reviews greeted a recording produced by David Travers-Smith and featuring a crew of ace musicians led by guitarist Kevin Breit (Norah Jones, k.d. lang). The trio wooed progressively larger audiences throughout North America while also making successful forays to Australia, the U.K. and continental Europe. And foremost among an unfolding series of life moments have been a second Juno Award nomination in Canada, the continuation of a much-cherished relationship with A Prairie Home Companion (Garrison Keillor's popular National Public Radio show) and a memorable date alongside Rosanne Cash at the prestigious Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.

            <date>Mar 12, 2010</date>

John Hammond, a Grammy Award-winning blues guitarist and a long-time icon of the music industry, will play at a special benefit concert at Hermanns Jazz Club. Hammond comes from a remarkable musical lineage. His father, John H. Hammond, worked as a talent scout for years and, because of the many careers he helped to launch, is considered one of the most influential figures in 20th century popular music. Those he discovered or helped along the way include Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Pete Seeger, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His discovery of Bob Dylan was known as 'Hammond's folly' at Columbia Records - until Dylan's career exploded.
John Hammond Jr. 'is one degree of separation from virtually every musician who influenced anyone ages 30 to 60 who listens to music,' said Island singer/songwriter Pete Droge, who recalled one Hammond album - 'I Can Tell,' produced in 1967 - that he 'couldn't get enough of' when he was a kid.
Lest you think Hammond is a blast from the past, his most recent album was named international blues album of the year by Rhythms magazine and a top 10 selection in Amazon.com's best music selections in the blues and folk category. Hammond wrote an unprecedented five original songs for the album, along with new renditions of tunes by Little Walter, Junior Wells, Tom Waits and more.

Come on out to see the hilarious musical theatre production of 'The Sorcerer' by The Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
The action takes place in a small, quaint village, (think Oak Bay!), where life is placid and boringly predictable, until John Wellington Wells, an employee of a respectable firm of Sorcerers (think Harry Potter's great grandfather!), turns their predictable little world upside down. He successfully tricks the villagers into drinking a magic potion from a large teapot, resulting in everyone falling in love with the first person they see. Hilarious consequences ensue and, in the topsy-turvy world of Gilbert and
Sullivan, of course, all's well that ends well!

Ten time Grammy winner George Benson is one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history and also an amazingly versatile musician. He can play in just about any style - from swing to bop to R and B to pop - with supreme taste. However, he is better known to the world as a pop/R and B singer. His songs Turn Your Love Around, Give Me The Night, and This Masquerade are world famous.
His new album, Songs and Stories, released in August 2009 is a collection of tunes penned by some of the most prolific and enduring songwriters of the last half-century, including James Taylor, Smokey Robinson, Lamont Dozier, Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway and several others. Some were written specifically for this new recording, while others were hand-picked by Benson for their ability to convey simple, but universal truths about the human experience. The record captures the somewhat under-appreciated, essential brilliance of Benson's storied career; the ability to simply touch people through authentic lyrics and beautiful melody. On Songs and Stories, George Benson's musical artistry has perhaps never been on sharper display.
What a fabulous way to open the Victoria Jazz Festival.

            <price>$2.00 - $12.00</price>
            <priceNotes>Free for Members</priceNotes>
            <date>Dec 18, 2009 - Apr 11, 2010</date>

Over the past five years, the AGGV has acquired well over two hundred old and new Japanese prints. More than half the prints were recently purchased by the curator or donors over the internet and a wide selection of these will be on display. The prints were acquired to augment the Gallery's fine collection of Japanese prints, one of the most comprehensive collections outside of Japan.
Glimpses of Japan will display prints by famous 18th and 19th century ukiyo-e artists like Hokusai, Kunisada, Hiroshige and his students Hiroshige II and III, and Yoshitoshi. There will be examples of works by print makers of the shin hanga (new print) movement of the 1920s and 30s like Yoshida and his sons, Toshi and Hodaka, Hasui, Kanpo, and Shotei as well as prints by major sosaku hanga (creative prints) movement of the 20th century like Watanabe Sadao, Munakata Shiko, and Yoshitoshi Mori.
The exhibition will offer interesting glimpses of Japan and its people from the 18th century through to the end of the 20th century. Subjects include landscape, historical scenes, individual portraits, genre scenes and impressionistic images.

            <date>Sep 25, 2009 - Mar 28, 2010</date>

Today, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria holds the largest public collection of art in the province. Working with a nearly blank slate, Colin Graham, the AGGV's founding Director, imagined a collection culled from every corner of the world. He wanted to give Victoria the whole gamut of ethnic cultures. Building relationships with Victorians who had art in their homes, Graham appealed to them to help establish a collection that could be held in public trust for the citizens of British Columbia.
The Birth of the Collection explores the various strengths of the collection including examples from local, Canadian, and international artists working in fine and decorative art media. Highlights include a significant collection of old master prints by Rembrandt, Durer, and Goya as well as works by other international artists such as Turner, Daumier, Rodin, and Whistler. Graham also developed a fine survey of important historical Canadian art including paintings by Emily Carr, David Milne, Fred Varley, and Arthur Lismer. Alongside these traditional works he introduced international modernism through prints by Wassily Kandinsky, Henry Moore, Odilon Redon, and Georges Rouault. Perhaps most significantly he represented the art of his time though modernist paintings by Mark Tobey, Jack Shadbolt, Roy Kiyooka, Jock Macdonald, and Jack Bush, among many others.

Colin Graham, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's Founding Director, had remarkable insight in starting the Asian art collection, now one of the most important in Canada. Among the very first works of art accepted into the Gallery's collection in 1950 were two Japanese woodblock prints by the well-known artist, Utamaro (1753-1806). These were given by important early benefactor, Miss Katherine McEwen. Following her lead, Miss Kathleen Agnew and Mrs. Massy Goolden generously supplied funds to purchase early Chinese ceramics and bronzes as well as Japanese lacquerware.
In 1960 the collection got its first major boost. Colin Graham met Mrs. Isabel Pollard of San Francisco and was able to persuade her to begin collecting Asian art for the Gallery. With astute Japanese antique dealer, Bunzo Nakanishi, and well-known Japanese scholar, Dr. Toru Mori, she built an extraordinary collection of nearly 1,000 works, mostly Japanese. In the 1970s, a retired Graham encouraged donation of works from esteemed collectors Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Finalyson and family of Toronto and Brian S. McElney of Hong Kong. Their support of the Gallery continues. Colin Graham also remains an enthusiast, having created a home at the AGGV for what is now a world renowned Asian art collection.

Emily Carr (1871-1945) became one of Canada's most beloved and original artists due to her hard work, artistic and spiritual passion, dedication to life-long learning, and exposure to different influences and experiences.
From the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Carr's paintings are set in context with the work of artists who inspired her and were inspired by her. This exhibition illustrates the shift in Carr's painting style from her early roots in 19th century British watercolour tradition alongside other artists like Josephine Crease and Sophie Pemberton, to the unique and modern expression that spoke of her love of Western Canada.
On display will also be a selection of works by artist who influenced her, including members of the Group of Seven - Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, and Arthur Lismer and American modernist Mark Tobey.
The exhibition recognizes Carr's legacy, including younger artists of her circle who were encouraged by her dedication and vision such as Jack Shadbolt, Myfanwy Pavelic, and Statira Frame.

.
The Victoria Genealogical Society (VGS) was established in 1978 as a non-profit volunteer society whose aim is to further the study of genealogy - the exciting search for one's ancestors and family history.
.
The VGS is a great place to meet people who truly care about the past and families; people who can teach you wonderful lessons about research and history. You can work directly with these people, learn from them, and help each other as you search for your family.
.
The VGS meets monthly, welcoming new members and encouraging more seasoned researchers to share their experiences and swap stories. Members and guests chat about Family Tree research and enjoy a guest speaker whose presentation is of interest to the Family Tree enthusiast.
.
Between meetings, the Victoria Genealogical Society Library in Vic West is open for browsing or research with a large collection of books, maps, periodicals and working papers of genealogical interest. Not just for local research, the library has materials covering all provinces and territories of Canada as well as the US, UK and other countries. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) bring together members with similar interests and research objectives to participate in small, focused meetings and discussions. SIGs generally meet once a month at the VGS Library, in groups ranging from 4 to 10 people. Visit our website for Library hours and location - www.victoriags.org/library.htm
.
The Society's Journal is published four times a year and contains interesting articles contributed by members as well as international genealogical news. The VGS website (www.VictoriaGS.org) offers a searchable database and links to other resources and upcoming events.
.
Membership rates for the Victoria Genealogical Society are $45.00 for individuals or the Family membership at $70.00 (Canadian) per year. If you'd like info about membership please send an e-mail to Membership@VictoriaGS.org and we'll get back to you.
