This summer, the life story of Canadian icon, Emily Carr is full of life in a never-seen-before collaboration dedicated to honouring her life, celebrating her mark in history and unveiling a never-seen-before historic journey of Victoria’s own Emily Carr.

Take in the Season of Emily by exploring the brilliant creations, writing and influence she has had on the Canadian and European world of art and culture. From May through October, take in exhibitions and concerts, visit her homes and explore the events that shaped her unprecedented life story.

The Other Emily: Redefining Emily Carr

March 2 – October 10, 2011 | The Royal BC Museum

Think you know Emily Carr? Think again! The Royal BC Museum’s newest exhibit, The Other Emily: Redefining Emily Carr, features Carr masterpieces alongside historical images, artifacts, as well as contemporary artist, Manon Elder’s, depictions of a young, vibrant Emily.

Emily Carr House

Experience the legacy of inspiration of Emily Carr by exploring the grounds and historic home of one of Canada’s most renowned creative figures. Situated in the charming James Bay neighbourhood, the graciously appointed Victoria villa and literary inspired garden are the wellspring fro this celebrated artist, author, environmentalist and champion of First Nations’ culture.

Visit Emily Carr House for interpretive and audio garden tours, gift shop, special events and People’s Gallery featuring works by contemporary artists and original works by Emily Carr. From June 14 - August 14, the People’s Gallery features “In Her Own Words: Carr, Maltwood and Pavelic”- rarely seen works by three unique artists. This season is the launch of “Our Emily” guided walking tours beginning at “Our Emily” statue at The Fairmont Empress Hotel, Wednesday through Saturday, at 11am. Emily Carr House is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

Emily Carr: On the Edge of Nowhere

June 30, 2010 – June 30, 2013 | The Art Galley of Greater Victoria

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has become the premiere destination on Vancouver Island to visit and learn about Emily Carr through her paintings. On the Edge of Nowhere includes a historical survey of Carr's artistic career, featuring pieces in all the media and styles she explored and perfected. It also focuses on Carr's influences and inspirations, such as European modern art, members of the Group of Seven artists, First Nations artists, Carr's spirituality, and her interest in developing an art that speaks of her personal experience as well as her connection to the West Coast landscape. Drop-in tours take place on Saturday, Sunday and the first Tuesday of every month at 2pm; no reservations are necessary. Your tour is included with admission to the Gallery.

Victoria Symphony

October 11 & 15, 2011

Remember the remarkable Emily Carr in a Victoria-wide collaborative celebration of this unique artist’s life and work. The Victoria Symphony will present two concerts that explore Emily Carr’s painting, poetry and connection to the people of the First Nations. These concerts will include the world premiere performances of several new works by Canadian composers and feature video presentations of Emily Carr’s artwork. Composers include Tobin Stokes, Giorgio Magnanesi, Anna Hostman, Veda Hille and Barbara Croall. Guest artists Marion Newman, Veda Hille and The Emily Carr String Quartet will perform.

Historic Walking TourA unique and rare showing of original art from the University of Victoria's Art Collections, this exhibit will examine the art of these three unusual women whose lives and art overlapped.
