Gardens & Parks
Victoria has long been known as the "City of Gardens." With our mild climate, gardening is a year round passion which has resulted in an abundant array of gardens world renowned for their beauty and individual charm.
As early as March 1 every year Victoria enjoys over two billion blooms and we do an annual flower count to prove it. We also have a hanging basket tradition that spans over 75 years. Hanging baskets are placed on downtown lampposts every June to signal the start of summer. When Victoria's baskets were first introduced, the practice of hanging flower baskets in public areas was limited to a few European cities. Our hanging flower baskets are now a trademark recognized around the world.
Beacon Hill Park is Victoria's main urban green space with over 190 acres (75 hectares) to explore. Located adjacent to Victoria's southern shore, it includes numerous playing fields, manicured gardens, exotic species of plants and animals such as wild peacocks, a petting zoo and views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic mountain range. The sport of cricket has been played in Beacon Hill Park since the mid-nineteenth century. Each summer, Beacon Hill Park plays host to several outdoor concerts and the Luminara Community Lantern Festival.
