Remembrance Day in Victoria, B.C.

Posted on November 6, 2019

Victoria has a rich military history that comes to life every November 11 for Remembrance Day. It's the ideal time of year to take in a ceremony at one of the region's cenotaphs or pay a visit to some of the city's many historic military sites and museums, and to enjoy this beautiful region in a season when summer's dazzle gives way to golden fall vistas, mystic coastal scenes and quiet reflection.

Remembrance Illuminated

November 8 - 11 | 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The sacrifices made by men and women during wartime, peacekeeping and other missions loom large in our collective memory. Christ Church Cathedral will make them loom larger this year through a new project called Remembrance Illuminated. For four evenings leading up to and including Remembrance Day, photos of Victorians and other Canadians will be projected several stories high onto the south tower of the cathedral.

An Afternoon of Remembrance at Fort Rodd Hill

November 11 | 12:00. – 4:00 p.m.

Since the end of World War 1 and the Armistice declared at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918, we as a nation have stopped to remember the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women in the field of battle at the same time each year, worn poppies, recited poems ingrained in our collective memories, grieved, and paused in silence.

Join Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites on Remembrance Day to hear local stories of people who went overseas, worked in industries or on the Homefront during both World War I and World War II.

Presentations offered from Parks Canada staff, the Maritime Museum of BC, and local military re-enactor groups.
