Top Five Outdoor Activities

With the mildest climate in the country, Victoria is Canada's destination for year-round outdoor adventures on both land and water. The city's character, beauty and natural surroundings inspire people to get outdoors and stay active.

Victoria has easy access to endless scenic trails and sites that incorporate mountains, old-growth rainforests and rugged ocean shores. While there are tons of outdoor adventures to be had, we’ve come up with our top 5 to get you started:

Cycling

According to the Government of Canada (Statistics Canada 2011), Victoria is Canada’s cycling capital. Per capita, more people in Victoria commute by bicycle than in any other Canadian destination because it’s one of the best ways to see the city!

Use the city's many bike lanes and cyclist-friendly streets or pedal the Galloping Goose and Lochside Regional trails (a massive trail network stretching over 90km from Swartz Bay ferry terminal all the way to Sooke).

Whale Watching

The clear waters surrounding Victoria are home to an abundance of marine wildlife, making them perfect for whale watching. The orca, or killer whale, is the main whale found in the area. Gray, humpback and minke whales are also often sighted.

See these majestic mammals up close with one of the city's many whale watching companies. Most tours launch from the Inner Harbour.

Kayaking

Equal parts peaceful and exciting, one of the greatest ways to experience Victoria and Vancouver Island is by kayak or canoe. See the Island from a unique, serene vantage point and discover places inaccessible by foot or car.

Victoria and its surrounding area has some of the best kayaking on earth. Find a local outfitter to rent a kayak or schedule a lesson or tour.

Hiking

Victoria is an extremely walkable city, but if you’re looking for more than a casual stroll through the streets, there are plenty of hiking and walking trails for every experience or ability level.

Some of the most popular parks for hiking are within 30 minutes from Victoria’s downtown core and include Goldstream Provincial Park, Mount Douglas Regional Park and East Sooke Regional Park. For a guided hike, consider the services of a company like HikeVictoria.com or R&T Rainforest Tours.

Ziplining

Experience the sensation of flying while getting up close and personal with a captivating west coast forest with Adrena Line Zipline Adventure Tours and WildPlay Element Parks.

AdrenaLine offers a number of ziplines ranging from 50 to 700 metres and exciting tours such as Full Moon Zips, while WildPlay offers several challenging high ropes courses—perfect for unleashing your inner daredevil.
