32nd Victoria Fringe Festival

The biggest theatre event on Vancouver Island, the 32nd Victoria Fringe Festival runs August 22 - September 2, 2018.

With artists chosen by lottery, 47 uncensored shows from across the globe, featuring almost every genre imaginable from puppetry to music to spoken word to walking tours, fill 7 traditional venues and 5 off-site venues for 12 days of indie theatre. Fringe-goers binge on this explosion of live performance, with tickets running $9 or $11 per show. The Fringe is a feast for the artistically curious and the most affordable theatre ticket in town, and a great way to experience live performance. With 189 applications from companies from across Canada, the United States, the UK, New Zealand, Germany, and Australia, the Victoria Fringe Festival offers audiences the opportunity to see live performance from across the globe alongside brand new work from local artists and companies.

The 2018 Fringe Festival features 19 Victoria-based companies. More than 70 years after the first Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, the guiding principle is the same: unjuried, uncensored, untamed alternative theatre takes centre stage. The Fringe gives artists the platform to take risks, to focus on progressive art forms and the freedom to experiment, while giving audiences access to indie theatre artists from around the world. Whether you are a longtime Fringe fan or a first-time Fringer, this summer’s Festival offers something for everyone: from the ever-popular one-day FringeKids Fest in Market Square (Aug 25, 11 am-4 pm), to the Fringe Eve Preview in Centennial Square (Aug 22, 3-9 pm preview from 5:30 pm) that kicks off the festival, to the 47 shows that take over the city in this signature summer event. There are shows from returning Fringe Favourites, brand new work from local artists, and no doubt a few surprise hits. The Downtown Victoria Buskers Festival runs on the final weekend of the Fringe, offering even more chances to see live performance across the city.
