Artist Statement from Margo Cooper on her exhibition:

My paintings always begin as strictly abstract, non-objective works. These generally morph into the semi-abstract or abstract-figurative because wherever I look, I find humanity—or the human figures find me. Once these figures have taken hold, I let them bring their stories into the painting.

Often the narrative changes within the painting from start to finish. Two figures become three, or the characters change direction or become something entirely different from when they began. Many times I change my own perspective when looking back at something I’ve completed. The message, or meaning, will vary depending on my mood, the light, or whatever else may be influencing me that day.

Eight years ago, my first solo exhibition in Victoria, “OPEN TO INTERPRETATION”, opened at the Gage Gallery on Oak Bay Avenue. It was great fun for me to invite visitors to interact with the paintings and offer their own interpretations of my work.

Visitors are encouraged to jot down their thoughts as they view these new works, and then to check my titles to see how similar or dissimilar our interpretations are.
