On the Road Journeys through Japanese Woodblock Prints
On the Road: Journeys through Japanese Woodblock Prints invites viewers to journey through the landscapes and scenes captured in Japanese woodblock prints. These works celebrate the spirit of travel, both physical and imaginative, along famed routes and hidden paths.
Travel and famous scenic locations were recurring themes in Japanese printmaking, as journeys along major roads like the Tōkaidō or views of Mount Fuji resonated deeply with the Edo-period fascination with exploration, pilgrimage, and the changing seasons. By bringing together prints from the AGGV’s collection that depict these celebrated routes and scenes, this exhibition highlights how travel has long inspired artistic expression and fostered a shared sense of place.
Destination Greater Victoria is honoured to be based on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples of the Songhees Nation and Xwsepsum Nation, whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
