HomeThings to DoCascadia Strings perform ‘Struggle and Freedom’ the works of Part, Wijeratne and Brahms!

The opening piece by Arvo Part; ‘Fratres’ is mesmerizing and well recognized in its adaptation to film scores.
Dinuk Wijeratne is a Juno Award winning contemporary Canadian composer who in his own words: “sought to create for them my own kind of ‘collision of old and new’, where the beauty and meaning of vintage poems might inspire the kind of loops, grooves, and catchy tunes heard in Pop. The melodies are, in fact, settings of the poem texts with the words stripped away.”
After intermission…
Brahms C minor work is as rhythmically compact, note efficient, and, in its outer movements, forward-driven as anything Brahms ever wrote.

The Program:
Fratres (for String Quartet) – Arvo Part
Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems –
Dinuk Wijeratne
I. ‘A letter from the After-life’
II. ‘I will not let thee go’
Intermission
String Quartet no. 2 in A minor, Op. 51 –
Johannes Brahms
I. Allegro non troppo
II. Andante Moderato
III. Quasi Minuetto, moderato
IV. Finale. Allegro non Assai
