Where does our water come from?
Greater Victoria's water supply takes a journey from treetop to tap. Rainfall first lands amongst the canopy of the Southern Vancouver Island's temperate rainforests in an 11,000 hectare watershed high in the Sooke Hills, before travelling for treatment, and then flowing right into the heart of downtown where it comes fresh from the tap.
Fun fact: When completely full, the Sooke Reservoir holds enough water to fill 31 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Is our water safe to drink?
It's not only safe, but delicious too! All of Greater Victoria communities receive high-quality drinking water fresh from our aquifer.
Our local drinking water meets all provincial and federal health regulations. Reservoirs, streams, and the drinking water itself are routinely sampled across all Greater Victoria municipalities. Our drinking water is tested every day for bacteria, turbidity (cloudiness), taste, odour, and chlorine at the Capital Regional District's provincially certified Water Quality Laboratory.

FAQs about our drinking water
Destination Greater Victoria has partnered with local Greater Victoria hotels to increase visitor access to the region’s drinking water. The program aims to create a culture of reuse within our visitor economy by encouraging a shift away from single-use plastic water bottles. Funding for this program is made possible through CleanBC Plastics Action Fund. Destination Greater Victoria gratefully acknowledges the financial support provided by the Province of British Columbia and Alacrity Canada through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
