High spirits on the Saanich Peninsula: Our Guide to Wineries, Breweries, Distilleries & Cideries

Posted on September 1, 2016

Rolling pastures framed by ocean and mountain views make a self-guided tour of the Saanich Peninsula wineries, cideries and distilleries a must for any liquor enthusiast. Guided tours as well as cycling tours to many of these are also available.

Church & State Wines

One of Vancouver Island's largest and most prolific wineries, Church & State Wines in Brentwood is a must-see for every visitor. Pouring award-winning wines daily from both their Vancouver Island Estate and Okanagan Estate vineyards, Church & State is a unique experience just 15 minutes from downtown Victoria.

Lunch is available from May to December in the bistro, featuring a fresh menu made from the finest local ingredients, each perfectly paired with Church & State's award winning wines. A Tasting Bar is also open daily for the Season, where wood-oven pizzas and light fare are available.

deVine Vineyards and deVine Spirits

John & Cathy Windsor created family-owned and locally operated deVine Vineyards out of 25 acres of fallow, overgrown, but extremely beautiful land on the Saanich Peninsula.

deVine Vineyards produces award-winning wines and spirits from local grapes, grain, fruit and honey. Sip and savour a wide range of red, white and rosés. On a clear day, you can stand on the Tasting Room patio and see Mount Baker and the Gulf Island on the horizon beyond.

deVine's German copper pot still, Brunhildë, has been hard at work producing a diverse offering for visitors' sipping pleasure. Vineyard, Orchard, Field and Hive is their philosophy for producing the finest gins, fruit brandy and honey rum and bittersweet Vermouth.

The Roost Farm Bakery & Vineyard Bistro

Situated in the heart of North Saanich pastoral landscapes, The Roost focuses on local food and wine, and sustainability. More than just a bakery-café, The Roost roosts on 10 acres of farmland where they grow many of the items used to produce the food they serve and their estate grown wines. Whether you sit on the porch, get comfy in the secret garden, relax on their "chicken-bus" or at a picnic bench looking out over the vineyard, you sure to enjoy a passionate experience.

Try their Little Red Combine, with a spicy black cherry aroma and full plum flavour, or the Signature Ginger Sweet Heart, a sweet and floral Siegerrebe slowly steeped with spicy, fresh ginger to create a unique experience.

Victoria Caledonian Distillery

The Victoria Caledonian Stills first breathed life at their new home in the spring of 2016, near the southern tip of Vancouver Island on Canada's wild and beautiful west coast. A modern brewery and distillery with roots planted firmly in the past produces the best possible single malt, pot still whisky and craft beers.

Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse

Sea Cider is a farm-based cidery located on the Saanich Peninsula just minutes from Victoria, on Vancouver Island. The ten acre farm is home to over 1,300 apple trees, made up of over 50 varieties of heritage apples.

Relax at the ciderhouse and drink in the panoramic water views overlooking the orchard across the Haro Straight to James Island. The Ciderhouse is open for tastings and tours year round 11:00 am.m to 4:00 p.m. Enjoy a flight of ciders paired with organic cheese and other local delectables. Top off your visit with a tour and browse their selection of hand crafted farm products.

Category 12 Brewing

Category 12's head brewer and founder, Michael Kuryk, has been brewing beer for nearly 20 years and has his doctorate in microbiology and biochemistry. After leading the creation of several world-class research labs, he decided it was time to make his own - dedicated to the pursuit of exceptional beer.

Michael's obsession with great beer, recipe optimization, and meticulous record keeping practices - honed during his research days - make him a brewer to be reckoned with. With his continual tinkering, you can expect a continually expanding line of seasonal releases, including those that pay homage to his favourite big Belgians and hoppy Northwestern ales.

Category 12 brew in small batches, just 30 kegs at a time. This gives optimum control over product and the ability to fine tune recipes, ensuring tasters get the best beer, every sip.

Seaside Distillery

For the past 10 years Victoria Distillers has been producing some of BC's finest handmade cocktail spirits in their copper pot still under the name Victoria Spirits. To accommodate their growing business, in 2016, the distillery has moved to a unique waterfront location in Sidney, BC. This larger facility, along with another larger copper still, opened its doors in May of 2016, welcoming the public for animated tours, informed tastings, and innovative drinks and bites in the on-site lounge and outside patio area.

Known for their Left Coast Hemp Vodka, Victoria Gin, Craigdarroch Whiskey and Twisted and Bitter cocktail bitters, visitors can discover the whole distilling process, from selecting the botanicals to blending, bottling and numbering each bottle by hand before sampling each product.
