Take a Swing at Greater Victoria's Scenic Golf Courses

Posted on July 23, 2020

Greater Victoria is truly a golfer’s paradise. With a pleasant climate year-round and breathtaking coastal landscape, Greater Victoria draws golfers from around the world to experience the beautiful and challenging courses. Victoria is also the gateway to the Vancouver Island Golf Trail—a 250-kilometre-long network of 14 scenic courses. For both beginners and experts, Greater Victoria offers golf experiences with some of the best scenery in North America. This season take part in this dynamic outdoor sport that offers the ideal opportunity to physically distance from other players.

The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort

The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa offers Canada's only 36 holes of Nicklaus Design golf. Choose the challenging Mountain Course or for more relaxing round, take on the Valley Course. Co-designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, the Mountain Course at Bear Mountain is set in the foothills of Mount Finlayson and strikes the perfect balance between playability and a truly challenging year-round golf experience for all skill levels. With panoramic mountain, city and ocean views set within rolling fairways and lush forest, it’s tough at times to keep focused on the game at hand! The Valley Course meanders through the forest, borders lakes, and traverses' creeks throughout its 18 holes, while offering spectacular views of Vancouver Island's beautiful landscape. In contrast to the Mountain Course, the par 71 Valley Course measures 6807 yards from the Golden Bear tees – around 400 yards shorter than its sibling. Factor in elevated tee boxes, more generous fairway widths, fewer bunkers and larger greens and the Valley course will likely be considered a “friendlier” version of the original.

Olympic View Golf Course

Olympic View Golf Course, aptly named for its beautiful views of Washington State's Olympic Mountains, is located just 20 minutes outside of Victoria's downtown core. The William Robinson course was built in 1990 and entices all who play it to come back again and again. Open to the public, Olympic View is always in great shape and there’s not a club in the bag that will go untouched. Navigating this 6,600-yard gem may seem like an easy stroll on paper, but players will tell you that their higher-than-handicap score was due to the distraction of two waterfalls, twelve lakes, roaming deer and soaring eagles.

Cordova Bay Golf Course

Just 20-minutes from downtown Victoria, take a swing by the Salish Sea. Cordova Bay offers a relaxed environment to take in the scenic views and reconnect with the game. Here, keep your head down while swinging and up when you’re not, so you can spot the 75 species of birds. Cordova Bay’s second course, The Ridge Course, offers the perfect place for a short game or for newcomers to hone their skills.
