Home > Cultivate Memories

Victoria boasts the mildest climate in Canada so it's no surprise that we are usually the first city to start blooming, often months before the rest of the country catches up. And you never have to venture far to see evergreen trees aplenty. But you might not know that when it comes to exploring fall colours, Victoria is also a fantastic place to witness trees turning brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red from mid-September to November.

Butchart Japanese Gardens

Cultivated Gardens

Over a century ago, Jennie Butchart began building what is now one of the world’s premier floral show gardens. The master gardeners at The Butchart Gardens ensure that there are blooms to see year-round. But as warm days transition to crisp nights, a parade of red, russet and golden maples emerges. It’s the perfect time of year to visit the Japanese Garden before winter begins. In November, as the gardens become quieter, enjoy a rare chance to see behind the scenes in some of the greenhouses.

In Oak Bay, visitors and locals alike can opt to enjoy an afternoon tea service surrounded by native Garry oaks and rhododendrons at Abkhazi Garden. Tip: Ask the friendly staff about the garden’s royal history!

Hatley Castle & Gardens

Heritage Gardens

Victoria’s rich history includes several National Historic Sites, like Hatley Castle and Gardens which features restored Victorian gardens. Spend an afternoon relaxing in Hatley Castle’s Japanese garden or look for birds in the thriving sanctuary of the saltwater lagoon.

Autumn Vibrancy

Of course, Victoria is known for its world-class cultivated gardens, respect for the unique character of the natural landscape. Neighbourhoods like Oak Bay, James Bay and Fairfield are wonderful places to explore on foot or by bike. Many streets are lined with chestnut or Oak trees – decked in their fall foliage alongside colourful heritage houses makes for a great viewing.

Beacon Hill Park is also a great place to visit and explore gardens, with giant rhododendrons, wild peacocks, and a petting zoo!
